Anshul Kothari Wins Gold at Nationals; First for Gujarat after Many Years

Anshul Ketan Kothari won a gold medal in the 50m freestyle event at the 65th Senior National Aquatics Championships held in Ranchi last week, becoming the first swimmer from the state of Gujarat to do so after a gap of many years.

His timing of 24.08 seconds was his best ever over this distance. Anshul also won a silver medal in the 100m freestyle event and a bronze in the 50m butterfly event. Speaking to Times of India, Anshul said, “I missed the gold in the butterfly by a whisker and was determined to get it in the freestyle.”

Kamlesh Nanavati, Secretary, Swimming Federation of India, also told the newspaper, “I don’t even remember when was the last time our state got a gold medal in these championships.”

Last month Anshul won his first ever international gold medal as a part of the Indian team that won the 4 x 100 m freestyle relay event at the Asian age group swimming championship held in Jakarta, Indonesia. Earlier he represented India at the Commonwealth  Games and the Asian Games, both in 2010, and also won a number of medals at national events.
