PSK Women's Forum Organizes Visit to Heritage Jain Temples in Mumbai

Parshwanath Temple at Matunga

As a celebration of religion during the chaturmas, Palanpur Samaj Kendra – Women’s Forum members went on a visit to various heritage landmark temples of Mumbai on Thursday, 8th September. The Jain community in Mumbai dates back to over 200 years, and it was interesting to know about the history of the old temples.

The excursion included the Neminath and Shantinath temples at Null Bazaar proceeding to the five derasars at Pydhonie – the Mahavirswami, Adinath, Shantinath, the renovated 200 year old Godiji Parshwanath temple with its exquisite carving and inlay works and the Chintamani Parshwanath temple which is 190 years old and houses a 500 year old idol of god.

The first derasar of Mumbai was the Shantinath temple at Bora Bazaar, Fort, which has a rare Padmawati Devi murti with twenty-four bhujas (arms). We also visited the Sahastrafana Parshwanath Temple at Matunga, and the tirth temples of Adeshwar Bhagwan at Byculla and Chembur.

Apart from the ancient temples, we also visited the uniquely pretty Kumarbhai’s temple for Munisuvratswami at Wadala, which was built recently.

At the end of the day, despite the tight schedule, people went home with peaceful profound experiences.
