Aadya Trivedi’s Award Winning Film ‘Mitti Paani’, Rooted in Banaskantha, Released

Mitti Paani, an award winning short film, having multiple connections with Palanpur and Banaskantha, produced by young filmmaker Aadya Trivedi was officially premiered and released on YouTube in early September. It has already won acclaim from viewers and was the film that won the highest number of awards out of 277 films screened at the Saptrang Short Fest in Ahmedabad previously.

The film’s story is based on a story by renowned Gujarati writer Dolat Bhatt, is centred in a rustic village near the Gujarat-Rajasthan border, and was largely shot in Banaskantha. It has been produced by the Palanpur Film Company, headed by Aadya, and guided by her parents Sanjay Trivedi and Tejal Trivedi, both well known in the creative field. Aadya’s grandparents, originally from Dhaka, Gujarat reside in Palanpur. Aadyaa, who holds a degree in filmmaking lives in Mumbai, and has directed various music videos and short films in the past few years.

‘Mitti Paani’ won three awards, including Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress at the Saptrang Film Festival at the at Babsaheb Ambedkar Open University in Ahmedabad in 2024, and was also selected for official screening at popular short film festivals held in Pune and Bengaluru in 2025.

It tells the story of Vaishakhi, the daughter of Ranchod, an affluent landowning farmer, and her interaction with her mother, Kirtida, pondering the compromises in matrimony even as Vaishakhi’s own marriage draws near, and her reunion with Mohan, her beloved but socially disparate suitor, on the eve of her nuptials. The story peaks soon after a fateful encounter near an abandoned well, where Mohan sacrifices himself to protect Vaishakhi's honour and the latter, consumed by grief and guilt, herself plunges into well shattering the village’s tranquillity, prompting Ranchod to confront the grim consequences of his actions. It is a story of silent sacrifices born of love and societal expectations.
