Kathak yoga exponent Seema Mehta presented a solo recital entitled “Umang Chhandam – A Journey” at the Little Theatre, NCPA, Mumbai on June 11, 2011. She has learnt this discipline under her guruji, Pandit Chitresh Das, the founder of the technique of Kathak yoga which combines dance and music with the basic principles of yoga for a full-fledged form of workout. Seema is the daughter of Purnima and Kaushik Kirtilal Mehta (Eurostar). In a traditional Kathak solo, the dancer sings a rhythmic cycle of seven beats; taal roopak, and performing various tihaais and chhands with her feet. Through this medium, Mehta shared her journey as a kathaka and her experience in developing the four elements; tayaari, layakaari, khoobsoorti and nazakat. Through her dance, she conveyed the idea that beauty is not found in destinations, but it lies in the journey itself; the journey of playing with rhythm, which is eternal.
Seema Mehta is the head of the Mumbai branch of the Chhandam School of Kathak. The performance was supported by the Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation.
